These water feature plants are naturally grown in ponds at Phil’s Farm - so you know they've been tested for suitability to our location. Some will also grow in colder climates, and quite a few do well planted in ordinary soil. lf you wish, Phil will help you select varieties for your specific situation.

$10 WATER CANNAS - 4 varieties, each with a different colored flower, blooming July through September. Choose blooms of red, orange tropicanna (with dramatic variegated leaf color), orange/yellow combo or a bluish-purple. Cannas thrive in ponds and boggy soil, but also do well in containers on a patio. We have planted them here on the farm in ordinary soil where they've had striking, vivid flowers and been quite drought tolerant for the past 10 years. The banana-tree style of leaf gives a tropical look. Blooms are on stalks about 3 to 6 feet high, depending on planting conditions. These are care-free eye-catching plants! Canna generalis (Cannaceae)USDA Zones 5-9
$10 & $20 PICKEREL RUSH-Blooming continuously early summer to first frost with soft violet/blue flowers, this pretty water plant has swirling, glossy heart-shaped leaves. The foliage provides shade, preventing excess algae growth & sheltering aquatic life. A native plant, it does well in full sun to part shade. Known for its hardiness and ease of care, it reemerges early every spring. It can be totally submerged in a pond, just partially submerged in water features, tubs & containers or planted in soil at water’s edge. We have found Pickerel Rush to be our most reliable pond plant. Pontederia Cordata USDA Zones 3-9 ($10 planted in 1 gallon pots; In 2 gallon & water pots $20)
$10 HORSETAIL RUSH-This native looks uniquely, starkly tropical, quickly providing a natural screen 2 to 3 feet tall. It withstands freezing temperatures, staying evergreen when planted in the ground, at pond’s edge, or in water up to 10 inches deep. If you want to keep it in a clearly defined space, plant it in a container. Equisetum Hyemale (planted in 1 gallon pots)USDA Zones 4-9
$10 BLUE RUSH is native to Oregon and one of the few evergreen pond plants. The bluish-green color of these slender hollow stems is quite distinctive, keeping its color year-round. Small gold flower clusters bloom along the stems before maturing with seeds and reddish fruits that sustain local songbirds, making it excellent for habitat gardens. Blue Rush is tough - excellent for erosion control, tolerating seasonal drought, maturing 1–2 feet tall at pond edges or in water up to 3 inches deep. Juncus Patens USDA Zones 4-9 (In small pots – Limited availability)
$7 (or 3 for $20) CREEPING JENNY-Resembling a delicate necklace, the leaves drape over the sides of ponds or rims of water features and containers with small yellow flowers in summer. Plant in water under 1 inch deep-it is an ideal companion plant for water features and potted plants. A wonderful edging plant for water gardens, it also grows in ordinary soil and makes a quickly spreading groundcover. (Some is displayed in the vonsai area behind our small gift shop.) Lysimachia nummularia USDA Zones 4-8
$10 (or 3 for $20) SORREL (Also known as Wood Dock or Red Dock) The young eye-catching leaves are edible – picture them added to make a colorful summer salad. They also can be cooked like spinach, added to stews and soups, or brewed into tea. They may grow up to 12 inches tall in shallow water or damp soil, but we also have had great success planting them in ordinary soil in our garden. Plant in a container if you do not want them to spread. Rumex sanguineus USDA Zones 5 – 8
$10 ZEBRA RUSH is named for bold white and green bands on slender reeds growing 2 to 6 feet tall. Plant in wet soil or in water up to 6 inches deep. It grows well in full or partial sun. Zebra Rush provides good fish habitat & acts as a natural water filter. Scirpus Zebrinus USDA Zones 5-9
$10 CORKSCREW RUSH A quirky, eye-catching accent in water features or at the edge of ponds and bogs, Corkscrew Rush grows in up to 6 inches of either fresh or salt water. It is a hardy perennial down to USDA Zone 3 and is evergreen in milder climates. It grows in sun or shade, maturing around 12 to 20 inches tall, or sometimes shorter. Corkscrew Rush is flexible and adaptable. It will weave around any rock-scape or driftwood and is an artistic addition to any water feature. Juncus Effusus ‘Spiralis’ USDA Zones 3-9 (limited availability)
