Do you want a non-invasive “living fence” privacy screen? Clumping Bamboo can be your best solution!

Clumping bamboo grows from a rhizome that develops new canes tightly only around its original base.

You may plant it directly into the ground and be assured that it is non-invasive – it stays true to its name: Clumping Bamboo!

May 12th update - We now have plenty of availability for all our clumping non-invasive bamboo varieties:

Listed below in order of mature height expected in the Portland area.

AVERAGE: 7 TO 9 FEET TALL AT MATURITY – FARGESIA RUFA (Nicknamed “Green Panda”) The perfect height for creating a non-invasive fence-height privacy screen. Green Panda sends up new culms that leaf out in early summer. These emerging shoots form tightly around the original base every season, maturing into a graceful semi fountain-like form. Green Panda is tolerant of both sun and shade - it is one of the most hardy and versatile clumping bamboos. A single Green Panda is eye-catching as a focal point in the landscape. A row of them makes an attractive living partition or border. Mature Cane Diameter ½ inch USDA Zones 5-9 Hardy to -10ËšF On Sale for $60 (Reg. $75)

AVERAGE: 12 to 14 FEET TALL AT MATURITY – FARGESIA ROBUSTA WOLONG

Wolong’s extra-large shiny dark green leaves give it an exotic appearance. It maintains a narrower profile than other clumping bamboo – excellent for limited space. Wolong is more sun tolerant than other varieties, but in hot climates protect it from the harsh direct summer afternoon sun. Wolong will also grow and mature even in full shade, thus is adaptable to many locations in a landscape. Wolong is a rare and prized bamboo.   Mature Cane Diameter ½-¾ inch USDA Zones 6-9 Hardy to 0ËšF Reg. $75, now on special for $60

AVERAGE: 12 to 14 FEET TALL AT MATURITY - FARGESIA SCABRIDA - Planted directly in the ground Scabrida will make a thick privacy screen that blocks unwanted outlooks. Canes emerge as green shoots, gradually aging with soft burgundy hues. As the old and new canes mix, variations in color create a dramatic contrast. Slender emerald-green leaves make a graceful sound in gentle breezes and give Scabrida a tropical look. Scabrida is sun tolerant. Mature Cane Diameter ½-¾ inch USDA Zones 6–9  Hardy to 0ËšF Special $75 (Reg. $85)

AVERAGE: 12 TO 15 FEET TALL AT MATURITY - FARGESIA ROBUSTA (Nicknamed “Green Screen”) and ROBUSTA CAMPBELL Confidently plant Robusta bamboo directly in the ground for an outstanding deer-resistant privacy screen that grows taller and more upright than many varieties. It has large graceful deep-green glossy leaves and light green emerging shoots. These develop into golden culms, creating attractive color variations among the canes. Robusta Bamboo is named for its robustness – it is drought and sun tolerant but also will grow well in shade.  Fargesia Robusta and Robusta ‘Campbell’    Mature Cane Diameter ¾ inch USDA Zones 7-9  Hardy to 10ËšF  Special $75 (Reg. $85)
