ESTIMATED HEIGHTS ARE FOR BAMBOO PLANTED IN CONTAINERS IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Bamboo is listed below in order of height – tallest types are at the bottom.

½ PRICE (Reg. $25 - $75) KIMMEI is erect with slender canes and mid-green leaves.  In mild climates like Portland it is a very slow runner (classified as a spreading bamboo in hot areas).  Kimmei grows well in sun or in the shade.  In a container expect it to reach 6 to 8 feet tall, perfect for screening a deck or hot tub. Now 2-5½ ft. tall Bambusa ventricose “Kimmei’  (only 1 left)

$50 CLOSEOUT - WET/WATER BAMBOO grows in wet soil or swampy areas where other bamboo types will not survive.  It grows straight and tall, about 18-25 feet (8-10 ft. in containers).  Its dense foliage makes it an effective privacy barrier in either sun or shade. Now 6-8 ft. Phyllostachys heteroclada purpurata (only 3 left)

½ PRICE (Reg. $25 - $75) JAPONICA’S leaves begin as low as ground level, providing a thick, lush green privacy screen.  It grows densely to about 12-17 feet tall,  6-10 ft. in a container.  Arrow is extremely shade tolerant, but it also grows well in full sun.  Some have variegated leaves for extra foliage interest.  Japonica is hardy and withstands wind and salt, so it is a good choice for coastal areas.   It also may be grown indoors. Now 2–6½ ft. Pseudosasa Japonica

$75 (5 gallon pot) & $100 (7 gallon pot) BLACK HALE Jet black canes develop quickly on Hale, usually within a year of the new green shoots.  This creates an attractive contrast of colorations as the bamboo matures. Narrow, long dark green leaves add to its elegance.  Hale is good for harsh climates and excellent planted in containers where it matures about 12 feet tall.  Some people grow Hale Black Bamboo indoors as a decorative plant.  Now 8-10 ft., depending on pot size  Phyllostachys nigra ‘Hale’ -Only 1 remaining of 7 gallon size @ $100

SALE $60 (Reg. $75) GOLDEN CROOKSTEM might be the most captivating bamboo because of its tendency to have some canes that zig-zag at the base, adding an architectural interest.  Also appealing is the way that new canes develop with a tinge of burgundy coloration, especially in sunlight.  Gradually the canes become a deep golden color with cascades of dark green leaves.  Golden Crookstem is robust, withstanding strong winds and cold temperatures, getting about 10-16 ft tall in a container.  It is the hardiest, most adaptable bamboo with golden canes.  Now 6-7 ft.  Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis’

SALE $60 (Reg. $75) BISSETII  has deep green clustered canes and thickly growing foliage, making it an almost entirely windproof dense privacy screen. It is especially suited for containers where it grows even bushier, about 10-16 feet tall.  It is tolerant of cold, heat, and  drought – the hardiest, most adaptable green cane bamboo.  Now 6½-7½ ft. Phyllostachys bissetii

½ PRICE (Reg. $25 - $75) GREEN RUNNER and GREEN/GOLD are outstanding choices for a dense hedge to provide privacy.  They grow quickly, the emerging green canes gain a gold tinge as they age.  (Green/Gold’s canes are more golden when mature.) Green Runners are grown here at Phil’s Farms, well-suited to local climate and conditions.  They thrive in full sun or in shade maturing about 14-16 ft. tall in a container.  Now 2-7 ft. tall.  (Green/Gold selection is limited.)

SALE $50 on 5 gallon size (Reg. $75), $85 for  7 gallon size. TEMPLE is ideal for screening “above-the fence” to filter out unwanted sights and noise.  Leaves grow close to the green canes that mature at 14-16 feet in a container, providing excellent density and privacy.  Traditionally it has been grown around temples for the relaxing sound of its large leaves in gentle breezes.  It brings a peaceful and restful atmosphere to city gardens.  Now 6-8 ft.  Semiarundinaria Fastuosa-Limited availability of Temple in 7 gallon pots $85

½ PRICE (Reg. $75) YELLOW GROOVE has green canes with some decorative vertical yellow grooves.  It quickly grows tall, dense, and firmly vertical, thriving in full sun or part shade.  When established, its strong canes withstand wind, cold, heat, and drought.  It grows 14-16 feet tall in a container, providing excellent privacy.  Now 6-7½ ft.  Phyllostachys Aureosulcata

SALE $50 (Reg. $75)  GOLDEN GROOVE canes begin a rich yellow, maturing to a deep golden with some yellow and green vertical grooves.  In sunshine canes may have a burgundy tint in spring and a few might have a zig-zag at the base.  Golden Groove quickly matures upright, and graceful to about 14-17 feet tall in a container.  It is virtually pest and disease free and thrives in full sun to partial shade.  Now 7-8½  ft.  Phyllostachys aureosulcata ‘Spectabilis’

SALE $60 (Reg. $75) HENON GIANT TIMBER BAMBOO – Henon’s average of 15-20 feet in a container will block out most tall buildings you wish to erase from your view.  Henon nigra creates an impressive “bamboo forest” that stands up to harsh weather and winter storms.  Its foliage has a graceful habit with canes emerging green.  Over 3 to 4 years they develop a distinctive dusty-grey/blue/whitish coloration.  These strong and decorative canes are prized for woodworking and crafts. Its bamboo shoots are one of the rare types that get 5 stars on the taste charts! Now 7½-8½ ft. Phyllostachys nigra ‘Henon’

SALE $60 (Reg. $75) RED MARGIN (Rubro) is one of the few very tall bamboos that have foliage starting at ground level.  Canes have red “margins” on emerging edible shoots, fading to soft shades of greens and golds.  Rubro tolerates wet sites and salt spray.  The strong canes, good for woodworking, in the ground mature between 20-40 feet, depending on conditions (18-20 feet in containers). Now 7-9 ft. Phyllostachys rubromarginata  - SOLD OUT UNTIL JUNE 7th.

SALE $50 (Reg. $75) GIANT JAPANESE TIMBER (Madake) forms an upright and strong privacy screen that will screen out even a 2 story or taller undesired outlook, maturing between 18 and 30 feet tall in a large container.  Its large, smooth and straight dark green canes are valued in woodworking.  Madake bamboo is easy to grow and has good wind resistance.  Now 6-7½ ft.
