RED MARGIN (Rubro) is fast growing, quickly forming an extremely dense privacy screen. It is one of the few very tall bamboos with foliage that can start at ground level. Rubro has attractive red 'margins' on emerging shoots in spring, fading to canes with soft hues of greens and golds.  It grows in sun or shade and can manage well at coastal sites with salt spray.  Rubro is hardy and withstands winter frosts and cold dry winds.  The strong canes can get up to 2 or 3 inches in diameter – they are excellent for crafts and woodworking.  Depending on planting conditions, Rubro Bamboo matures 18 to 25 feet in containers.

BISSETII  Whether you want to screen a hot tub, deck, or the neighbors, the dark green canes and thickly growing foliage make Bissetii one of our most asked-for bamboos for this purpose.  It grows fast and has densely clustered, almost entirely windproof canes.  Bissetii is easy to grow, low-maintenance, upright, evergreen and one of the most resilient bamboo varieties.  When established, Bissetii Bamboo is tolerant of cold, heat, and drought.  Average mature height is 12 to 16 feet when planted in containers (depending on conditions).  Phyllostachys bissetii

GOLDEN CROOKSTEM might be the most captivating bamboo because of its tendency to have some canes that zig-zag at the base.  New canes develop with a tinge of burgundy coloration, especially in sunlight.  Gradually the canes become a deep golden color with cascades of dark green leaves.  Golden Crookstem is robust, withstanding strong winds and cold temperatures, getting about 10-16 ft tall in a container.  It is the hardiest, most adaptable bamboo with golden canes.   Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis'

TEMPLE has leaves that grow close to the green canes that mature at 14-16 feet in a container, providing excellent density and privacy.  It is the ideal choice for screening "above the fence" to filter out unwanted views and noise.  Traditionally it has been grown around temples for the relaxing sound of its large leaves in gentle breezes.  It brings a peaceful and restful atmosphere to city gardens. Semiarundinaria Fastuosa

GOLDEN GROOVE canes begin a rich yellow, maturing to a deep golden with some yellow and green vertical grooves.  In sunshine canes may have a burgundy tint in spring and a few might have a zig-zag at the base.  Golden Groove quickly matures upright, and graceful to about 14-17 feet tall in a container.  It is virtually pest and disease free and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Phyllostachys aureosulcata ‘Spectabilis’

MADAKE TIMBER BAMBOO  This tall bamboo forms an upright and strong privacy screen that will filter out even a 2 story or taller undesired outlook.  It matures between 18 and 30 feet tall in a large container - depending on location and conditions.  Its large, smooth, straight dark green canes are valued for woodworking and crafts.  Madake Bamboo is easy to grow and has good wind resistance.  Now 6½-8 ft. tall.  Phyllostachys bambusoides "Madake'-also known as Giant Japanese Timber Bamboo (very limited amount left)

YELLOW GROOVE has green canes with some very subtle, narrow, vertical golden-yellow grooves.  It quickly grows tall, dense, and firmly vertical, thriving in full sun or part shade.  When established, its strong canes withstand wind, cold, heat, and drought.  It grows 14 to 16 feet tall in a container, providing excellent privacy.  Phyllostachys aureosulcata  (7 left)

½ PRICE (Sale prices start at just $15) GREEN SCREENING BAMBOO are outstanding choices for a dense hedge to provide privacy.  They grow quickly, the emerging green canes gain a gold tinge as they age. Green Runners have been grown here at Phil’s Farms for 15 years now, and are well-suited to local climate and conditions.  They thrive in full sun or in shade maturing about 14-16 ft. tall in a container.  The half-price ones are from about 2 to 8 ft. tall now, all planted in containers 1 to 8 gallon size.  THERE IS STILL A GOOD SELECTION.

½ PRICE (So sale prices start at just $10!) ARROW (JAPONICA) BAMBOO leaves start as low as ground level, providing a thick, lush green privacy screen.  It grows densely to about 12-17 feet tall, and about 6-12 feet in a container.  Arrow is extremely shade tolerant, but it also grows well in full sun.  Some of our containers have combos including Variegated Arrow for extra foliage interest.  (These combos are clearly labeled.)  Arrow is hardy and withstands wind and salt, so it is about the very best choice for coastal areas.  A bonus is that it also may be grown indoors.   Most are now from 2 to 6½+ feet tall, all planted in containers 1 to 8 gallon sizes.  Pseudosasa Japonica SALE LIMITED TO CURRENT INVENTORY.

½ PRICE CLOSEOUT (Now $30) - WET/WATER BAMBOO grows in wet soil or swampy areas where other bamboo types will not survive.  It grows straight and tall, about 18-25 feet (8-10 ft. in containers).  Its dense foliage makes it an effective privacy barrier in either sun or shade. Now 6-8 ft. 5 gallon pot Phyllostachys heteroclada purpurata (3 left)

BLACK HALE - These are not on sale, only 3 remain - Jet black canes develop quickly on Hale, usually within a year of the new green shoots.  This creates an attractive contrast of colorations as the bamboo matures. Narrow, long dark green leaves add to its elegance.  Hale is good for harsh climates and excellent planted in containers where it matures about 12 feet tall.  Some people grow Hale Black Bamboo indoors as a decorative plant.  Phyllostachys nigra ‘Hale’ - 1 available @ $75 (5 gallon pot), 1 @ $100 (7 gallon pot), 1 @ $150 (large 10 gallon pot)
